The land does not complain. It cannot. But it shows. A field that once yielded well on modest inputs now needs twice the fertilizer to produce half as much. The groundwater that used to surface at thirty feet now takes a borewell twice as deep to find. The soil that held moisture through a dry week now cracks after two rainless days. These are not signs of bad farming. They are signs of what happens when the land has been asked to give more than it can sustain – season after season, with no real chance to recover.

And the farmer who works that land carries the same exhaustion in a different form.

Decades of Pressure on the Land

The Green Revolution transformed Indian agriculture’s output. It also transformed what Indian fields were asked to do. High-yielding varieties, chemical fertilisers, and intensive irrigation unlocked productivity that had never existed before. But the model that created those yields also created a dependence  on inputs that cost money, on water that was being drawn faster than it was replenished, and on a style of farming that left little room for the land to breathe.

Small farmers adopted these practices not out of ignorance but out of necessity. When a neighbour’s yields doubled, falling behind was not an option. When traders and input sellers promoted chemical-intensive farming, the incentive structure pushed in one direction. Over time, the soil paid the price.

The Farmer Pays It Too

When soil health declines, input costs rise. When input costs rise on a small holding, the margin between a good harvest and a loss becomes razor thin. A farmer who once spent a modest amount on fertiliser to get a reliable yield now spends significantly more for a less reliable one. The arithmetic of farming gets worse every season.

This is one of the ways exhausted land exhausts the farmer. Not dramatically, not all at once, but incrementally  through rising costs, falling yields, and the slow accumulation of debt that comes from trying to compensate with more inputs for what the land is no longer naturally giving.

CCD has seen this pattern across its regions in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Maharashtra. And it has made soil restoration a central part of its sustainable agriculture work because the farmer’s recovery and the land’s recovery are the same project.

What Restoration Actually Looks Like

CCD supports farmers in transitioning toward natural and sustainable farming practices – composting, vermicomposting, crop rotation, intercropping, and reduced chemical dependence. This is not a romantic return to the past. It is a practical response to what intensive farming has done to the economics of small landholdings.

The shift takes time. Yields may dip in the first season or two as the soil adjusts. This is why CCD works within the cooperative structure  because a farmer who is part of a collective can afford to make a long-term investment in their land in a way that an isolated farmer, dependent on this season’s harvest to repay last season’s loan, simply cannot.

When the Soil Recovers, Everything Follows

What happens when a field that has been pushed too hard is finally allowed to recover? Input costs drop. Yield quality improves. The farm becomes more resilient to erratic rainfall because healthy soil holds moisture better. The farmer spends less and retains more of what the harvest brings.

This is not just an agricultural outcome. It is a financial one, a physical one, and in the quietest way, an emotional one. A farmer watching their land come back is a farmer who can imagine the next season differently.

The soil is not separate from the person who tends it. When one is depleted, so is the other. And when one begins to heal, the other does too.
